While we didn’t land any of the big tuna we were chasing, we filled our coolers with albacore tuna and a boatload of dolphin fish, also known as mahi-mahi or dorado. Their vibrant colors and incredible taste made the trip more than worthwhile. We grilled some steaks onboard and savored the mahi-mahi—one of the best-tasting fish in the world, second only to tuna in my book. The trip cost us $1,500 in fuel, but the experience, the camaraderie, and the ocean’s reward made it a memory I’ll always treasure.
Over the years, I’ve caught many mid-sized tuna, ranging from 200 to 400 pounds. However, I’m still chasing my dream of landing a giant—one of those legendary 800 to 1,100-pounders. I hold out hope that I have time yet to appeal to the great gods of the sea, Poseidon and Neptune, to grant me that one unforgettable catch.
Ronald Smith
My journey to writing this book began with a deep and lifelong love of the sea. In 1976, at the age of 13, my family moved from Western Massachusetts to Narragansett, Rhode Island, so my father could take over my grandfather’s cobbler business. That move changed my life. I was instantly drawn to the ocean and spent nearly every sunny day at the beach, playing in the waves, learning to boogie board, and attempting to surf—though I never quite mastered it.
Around that time, I met my close friend Dean, who lived just two streets away. We both shared a passion for the water. Dean introduced me to boating; his father, an old “Swamp Yankee” fisherman, allowed us to take his boat out before school. We’d scallop in the mornings, shuck them after school, and sell them to local restaurants by dinner. We also went clamming, water skiing, and spent countless hours on the boat whenever we weren’t in school. Not long after, I bought my first boat, a Boston Whaler.

About The Book
This book is a collection of personal adventures and nautical escapades that have shaped who I am today. Within its pages, you’ll journey with me through long-distance voyages—some stretching over 1,300 nautical miles—and smaller, quieter moments like rowing a simple boat. No matter the vessel or distance, I lose myself in the water and the world around it whenever I’m near or in the sea.
My wife plays an important role in this story. She has always been either my compass when I needed direction or my anchor when I needed grounding. Her steady presence is woven throughout these stories.

What People Say

I am from a group in a book club and none of us are boaters or sailors, yet we have all enjoyed this writing thoroughly in our get-togethers. Being able to imagine the experiences of Captain Ron is fascinating.

As a literary critic, the placement of phrases and sentences take you to a far-off place. This is one book I will hang on to lose myself when needed.
